Roatan History Tour

As soon as you have met up with us and are escorted to your air-conditioned tour vehicle, your historical tour begins with some of the most interesting and lively places in our beautiful Roatan . Sightseeing will take in the local life in colorful villages like Coxen Hole, the busy Capital City of the Bay Island where you will have at least 45 minutes to shop and find those little treasures to take home as wonderful memories of Roatan. We will stop at local souvenir and artisan stores so you can enjoy beautiful handmade mahogany crafts, recycled metal artwork, woven hammocks and much more.
A stop at the more laid-back Spanish town up the mountain is where you'll find MAYAN EDEN PARK, an Animal Preserve. Our time here will give you a chance to hold and frolic with the playful monkeys, sloths, katamundi, scarlet macaws, parrots, island deer, and other animals.

On the way to French Harbour, home to the island’s largest fishing industry, you’ll pass through LOS FUERTES village with probably the biggest local population in Roatan. Then in PUNTA GORDA, known as 'THE GARIFUNA VILLAGE', where you receive a warm welcome from the Garifuna people when you arrive at their beautiful village by the water on the east south side of the Island. During your time here, make sure to sample some of the freshest island style fish while enjoying the Garifuna history and culture.

One of the most exciting stops is the famous Iguana Farm where you can feed and touch the big iguanas. Have your photo taken with an iguana on your back for a lifelong memorable keepsake! And, don’t forget to take the opportunity to get a close-up look at the many different species of marine life in their natural habitats; tarpon fishes, turtles, barracudas, lobsters, conch, etc….

Views
On the way to Punta Gorda we will stop at the narrow high point with views of the ocean on both sides of the island. From here, you will be able to take breath-taking panoramic photos of the sparkling ocean and mountain vistas. You can capture the beauty of the picturesque village of Oak Ridge known as “The Venice of Roatan” where the wooden houses are built on stilts right in the water.

MANGROVE TUNNELS
Taking a water taxi at Oak Ridge is an experience to never forget. You will be taken by boat past the Oak Ridge water houses and continue through the secluded Mangrove Tunnels. As you motor quietly through these magical tunnels, imagine what it was like in another era long ago for the British pirates who used these tunnels as a refuge during the wars against Spain ; mangroves are witnesses of persecution, hidden treasures and legends of sunken ships. Today, these tunnels serve as home to a host of wildlife; especially waterfowl. As you explore deeper into the tunnels, have your camera ready as your boatman will help you spot these local inhabitants. As a special bonus, you will enjoy a 45-minutes stop to jump in to cyistal turquoise waters through the mangrove at any spot you like. The boatman will happily wait to bring you back to the vehicle. Keep your eyes out for the huge termite nests high up on these trees!
